This is the International Year of Astronomy, a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.
The Vision for this International Year of Astronomy is:
* Everyone should realize the impact of astronomy and other fundamental sciences on our daily lives.
* Everyone should understand how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society.
IYA2009 activities are taking place locally, nationally, regionally and internationally, establishing collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers, science centers and science communicators.
As 2009 draws to a close, take the time to rediscover your place in the Universe. Here in the United States the days are getting shorter and that means the nights are getting longer. You have more time to gaze at the stars, and wonder at the beauty and science of our universe. How does astronomy, and the stars impact our daily lives? How does astronomy contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society?
Check out this month’s Mission Mandate, Sky Bear and Other Creatures, and let us know what you think. Looking forward to hearing from you!
